Upcoming Classes

I teach classes several times a year at Photoworks in Glen Echo Park, Bethesda MD.  I also offer private tutoring sessions for students who need schedule flexibility or have specific needs that are better handled in a 1-on-1 setting.

Get started with Adobe Lightroom Classic

March 18 - April 29, 2026 (6 sessions)
7-9:30 pm Wednesdays
Tuition: $350

Adobe Lightroom Classic is the most popular software used by photographers of all skill levels to organize and edit their digital photos.

When you have made a photograph you love, there is more you can do.  Lightroom Classic’s powerful editing tools will help you explore your photos creatively, to surface what makes each photo interesting through adjustments to brightness, color, and texture.

Lightroom Classic can also help you organize your photos so you can navigate to them easily, whether they are stored on your computer or an external hard drive.

Lightroom Classic’s tools are easy to use, as simple as moving a slider to the left or right.  You can keep it simple with a few basic adjustments, or make more sophisticated changes that target the sky, landscape features, objects, or people (especially facial features).

If you would like to get started in Lightroom Classic, start with this course.  Whether you are a beginner or have tried to learn it on your own, you will find this class to be extremely helpful.

What you will learn:

  • How to import your photos into Lightroom Classic from your camera, phone or hard drive.
  • How to organize your photos: Lightroom Classic tools and best practices.
  • How to use Lightroom’s image editing tools: change your photo’s brightness, color, contrast and sharpness.
  • Techniques to target an edit enhancement to part of your photo.  Lightroom Classic’s AI tools make it easy to pick out part of a photo (sky, object, portrait subject, facial features) to make it more (or less) prominent.
  • Removal of distractions, including people and reflections.
  • How to export your photos to email, web, social media, or your printer.

Class will be held online using Zoom and will include live software demonstrations plus hands-on practice with your images.

A recording of each session will be made available via a permanent link on Youtube.

Requirements:

  • Skill level: Beginner.
  • Minimum Age: 18.
  • Software: Adobe Lightroom Classic subscription (Lightroom plan recommended (compare plans).

Lightroom Classic Collections: the best way to organize your photos

April 18, 2026 (6 sessions)
1-3:30 pm Saturday
Tuition: $90

Learn how to use Collections, the powerful organizing tool in Lightroom Classic.

Collections bring together photos from across your hard drives without creating duplicates.  They help you identify your best work and then focus on it.

Gather photos from an event, a trip, or just a theme you want to explore, then share them on social media.

What you will learn

How Lightroom Classic works under the hood as a database and how that enables the creation of “virtual folders” called Collections. Multiple Collections can contain the same photo.  Edits to a photo appear in all Collections it belongs to.

How to create different types of Collections and organize them.

Learn how collections can be used

  • Events, trips, subjects, themes.
  • Use Collections to edit a large group of photos, narrowing down good shots to the best.

Class will be held online using Zoom and will include live software demonstrations plus hands-on practice with your images.

A recording of each session will be made available via a permanent link on Youtube.

Requirements:

  • Skill level: Intermediate – this class will be hard to understand if you don’t haven't used Lightroom Classic before.
  • Minimum Age: 18.
  • Software: Adobe Lightroom Classic subscription (Lightroom plan recommended (compare plans).
